Here's some potentially illuminating information.

I was running short of space in /var/tmp and deleted /var/tmp/kdecache-paul
(it's "tmp" so should be deletable, right?).

The directory currently exists, but I now don't find any Amarok-pixmaps.kcache
file or any other file with 'amarok' (case-insensitive) in the name, so cannot
test (or take advantage) of this work-around.

However, this then raises another question: could my deleting of
/var/tmp/kdecache-paul have triggered this problem?
