David's right - setAttribute() works.  This would have been more obvious if my test \
case had appended the input to a form, hence the updated test case.  Furthermore, if \
you use setAttribute() to set the type, getAttribute("type") returns the correct \
type, though elmInput.type returns "text".

If I recall correctly, other browsers sometimes treat foo.setAttribute("att", "blah") \
differently from foo.att = "blah".  I find this puzzling, since my understanding is \
that they're supposed to be equivalent. \
