To clarify the initial comment slightly. I indicated that thumbnails were created but \
not displayed however this was only part of the story it would seem. After I changed \
the settings mentioned and all preview images stoped showing (including hover over \
previews) it would seem that thumbnails also stopped being created. After cleaning \
out the ~/.thumbnails directory I noticed that thumbnails were not being written. 

By turning off the cache (Configure Konqueror-->Cache-->Enable (off)) I have managed \
to get hover over preview images to work again. THe expected images appears in \
~/.thumbnails/large _______________________________________________
