it is a maildir.  all my folders are maildirs now.  being maildirs fixed that 
problem that i have corresponded with you so much about before (the one about 
indexes being out of date)...=)  anyways, back to the current issue.  yes, 
kmail has been shutdown improperly many times for various reasons.

i'm looking at kmail now...sure enough in my outbox are 3 messages, 2 that i 
know have already been sent properly, and one 'blank' one.  kmail was 
shutdown properly before it was started up this session.
