Hi, I am a reader of this group, but presently rather with a view on
using KUML than on contributing (sorry, timing constraints).

The image retrieval system we are developing uses MRML, an XML-based
protocol for communication between sever and client. We wanted
human-readable communication, in order to make both logging and
debugging easier.

We had experimented before with flex/bison, and I really think that for
the purpose for which we use MRML, the use of XML saves you a lot of work. And
moreover, you get some benefits for free, like the possibility to
write your own XSLT to make some beautified version of config files,
communication logs etc. .

I think that some points of this article ARE valid, you have to keep an
eye on the readability of the XML you use. Otherwise you end up loosing
this benefit, and some of the XML stuff I have seen basically consists
of wrapped hexcode. But even for that there are some justifications:
There are many exsisting parsers for XML, and you keep things very
flexible. If speed is not an issue, this is the way to go (IMHO).

Alternatives: CORBA? I do not know enough about CORBA to know if you
can easily write the content of a CORBA object to disk. In fact, I
doubt it, but CORBA tends to surprise me. Does anybody know something
about this?

Cheers,
Wolfgang
