Package: kdesktop
Version: KDE 2.1.1
Severity: normal
Installed from: RedHat RPMs
Compiler: Not Specified
OS: Linux
OS/Compiler notes: using compiled RPMS - compiler not applicable

Unable to unlock screen with password protection enabled. After rebooting (using \
reset button), I can't login as root anymore from within the login screen. Oops! But \
at least I can go to a console window and login as root from there.

I was logged in as root, and configuring KDE. Had set up the blank screensaver, \
selected password protection, and pressed the 'test' button.

I installed KDE 2.1.1 from RPMs on KDE's US FTP site.

ftp.us.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/2.1.1/distribution/rpm/RedHat/6.x/i386.

I have applied the latest RedHat updates for 6.2, including 2.2.19 kernel. This was a \
clean, fresh install, with no KDE originally installed.

Since I did not build the KDE packages, I don't know whether kdebase was configured \
using --with-shadow or --with-pam. But I'm assuming that whoever built them at KDE \
knew that needed to be done.
