Right click on kicker--->add---->

oops, {clock applet, system tray, pager, taskbar} are greyed out.  One thing they \
                have in common, in their files located in
/opt/kde/share/apps/kicker/applets/

each of the .desktop files has this line at the end:

X-KDE-UniqueApplet=true

Erasing this line allows the applets to be used.  Strange, no?
