System is FreeBSD 4.2; Hardware is Dell LM 166MHz:

FreeBSD 4.2-20001216-STABLE #0: Sat Dec 16 12:57:35 GMT 2000
CPU: Pentium/P55C (167.05-MHz 586-class CPU)
real memory  = 41943040 (40960K bytes) 
                                         
shutting down kde with atrl-alt-backspace also produces a panel and
desktop with no color. The following corrects the problem:

   rm -r .MCOP-random-seed .gtkrc .kde .kderc
