I had thought that this may have been because i have been running XFree86 3.3.6 as per supplied with Suse 6.4
but having bit the bullet and installed XFree86 4.0.1  am still getting exactly the same problems
with several programs  kmix , xmms, xsetisthome, krabber, and many more as well .
