I have a slightly different problem. In Mandrake 5.3, kppp starts with
the volume set at M1L4. The kppp dialogue window shows an error message
after the M1L4 command, then proceeds to dial the number and make a
connection with full functionality. In Mandrake 6.0, kppp shows the
error message after M1L4 and then hangs and is timed out. If the modem
speaker volume is reset to M0L0, the error message goes away and the
connection is made, but with no modem speaker to indicate how the
connection process is going. This happens with two modems I've used in
this box: a Best Data Smart One 336F and a Zoom 2819 K56flex, both with
Rockwell chipsets.

It would be nice to have modem speaker on (though some probably don't
like the modem sounds) in the latest Linux kernel, but there is
apparently a disconnect that is low priority on the list of things to
fix. Caldera Open Linux 2.3 was also on this box at one time, and the
same phenomenon was observed in kppp with it.

Does anyone know what's going on?
