Subject: Bug#2208: kmail crashes system when filtering large mailboxes

Package: kmail
Version: 1.0.24

System: Redhat 6.0, kernel 2.2.9, KDE 1.1.1, on Pentium Pro, 64 megs ram.

In moving to kmail, it was convenient to have kmail use filtering on
several large mailboxes (> 3000 messages) to break them out into smaller
ones. This resulted in one total system crash - frozen, couldn't even
switch to a character-based terminal to kill processes (something I've
seen only once before in years of running Linux), and a couple of
instances where X became partially unresponsive and needed to be
restarted.

Does this mean it has a really nasty memory leak? It's a nicely designed
program, certainly better than the Applix Mail I'd been using (which has
many bugs, as well as being badly laid out on the screen). However, I
notice that kmail has more outstanding bug reports than any other part of
KDE, while the koffice crew isn't doing anything to handle mail, since
there's already kmail. Hopefully it can be brought back into active
development, since mail is a primary function for many of the users KDE is
aimed at, and kmail is quite a good start at providing it.
