I have more info about the drag and drop problem in kmail. I am
generally able to reproduce it as follows:

Make sure you have a more than few messages in your inbox from a variety
of different authors. Sort them into order by date. Exit and restart
kmail. Then delete a few messages from your inbox. Next, drag and drop
a message to another folder.

What kmail apparently does is this:

1) determines the ordinal position of the message to be moved
2) spontaneously resorts by author (perhaps a default problem?)
3) moves the messages which now has the ordinal position determined in
step 1.

I am running KDE-1.1 for RH5.2 from rpm.
This bug is really annoying.
