I might have stumbled upon this issue as well:

KMail window in Kontact was showing unread mail - unread emails in the list
were highlighted, the folder tree was showing unread emails in inbox (count of
messages in parentheses), Inbox->Folder properties->General had "Act on
new/unread mail in this folder" checked, I even got a new email notification in
the corner of the screen, but Kontact summary stubbornly said "No unread
messages in your monitored folders"

The problem was that in Settings->Configure Kontact->Summary->New messages the
Inbox folder was not checked.

Now I see that it is logical, but for and unsuspecting user (eg. me twenty
minutes ago) it might be hard to understand that it is necessary to check
several checkboxes to really be notified on new email in all the Kontact tabs.

Would it be possible to warn the user in Summary window that no folders are
being monitored and possibly place a button there that opens the appropriate
settings window?
