UPDATE:

Adding an image sequence through the "Add Slideshow Clip" method (using the
Filename pattern method) produces the result I'm looking for: a series of .png
images are imported as a single clip, moving at 1 still image per frame.

Currently, trying to add the same .png files as above using the "Add Clip",
then selecting all and enabling the "Import image sequence" checkbox and
clicking "OK" imports all of the .png files as separate files, each with a
duration of 5-seconds.

CONCLUSION:
Maybe it would be better to remove this check-box from the Add clip import
window (and probably the transparency checkbox next to it, since it would only
logically apply to image sequences, anyways) and simply educate users to use
the Add Slideshow clip method?

If we go this route, I would suggest finding a better term for the Clip.
Industry professionals will recognize "image sequence", typically, as importing
a series of stills into a single clip.

Maybe even separate the two into two different options: "Add Slideshow" and
"Add Image Sequence", then create a layout similar to the "Add Slideshow"
widget, but hard-coded for importing still images in a sequence? Just
brainstorming, here.
