XInitThreads() causes problems with my VLC, too. If possible, I would like to
see if you tried to use libvlc-dev-2.1.6. It is the default for at least Ubuntu
at the moment. I will try to reproduce this error.

If this causes too much trouble, I'll have to think about reverting to Xine
(which causes many problems of its own).

Anyway, 1.2.2 can always be used.
