adding the following to vlcmediawidget.cpp should work

#include <X11/Xlib.h>

and 

XInitThreads();

in the VlcMediaWidget::init()-method.

If you could let me know if that works for you and also if you encounter
"undefined reference" mentioned in
(http://stackoverflow.com/questions/23585435/cannot-call-xinitthreads)
