I have exactly the same problem only with chrome and an nvidia graphics card.
Chrome works fine, i.e. scroll wheel on the tabs changes the window title
accordingly, but the display of the window freezes regularly for some seconds.
The freezing stops on disabling compositing with Alt-Shift-F12.
