I tried the KDE 5 preview, and that doesn't have the problem, which makes me
suspect strongly that it's the code for handling legacy systray icons — as KDE
5 drops support for those APIs.

Unfortunately, KDE 5 has other problems that make it not ready for use yet, so
I've switched to XFCE temporarily so I can get work done :-(
