I had a big performance regression after the last driver update and hadn't
gotten around to debugging it. I won't be on the computer with the nvidia card
for another day or so, so I can't test the new one yet, but it's probably that,
and not the sleeping business.

usleep is still working great for me, though, as far as this issue is
concerned.
