I traced the problem to
file:///var/lib/dpkg/info/kubuntu-settings-desktop.postinst, which threw an
abend because it reached the eof when it should have encountered a "}"/

I added a "}" before  the "exit(0)" command and reran the script.  Both the
kubuntu-settings-desktop and the kubuntu-settings-netbook were properly 
configured.
