Thanks for your suggestions.  The problem turned out to be some kind of
database update problem in Amarok I think.  While trying to edit the various
tags to conduct experiments, I noticed that edits were not being recognized
despite rescanning the collection.  Eventually I managed to get Amarok to
detect the edits, and then it did exactly the correct thing with the original
tags.  My best guess is that the Artist and Album Artist tags were previously
switched, and then they were corrected, but Amarok did not find out.

How do you get Amarok to update from the tags in the files?  Is "Tools/Rescan
collection" insufficient?  Is a "Full Scan" required?  The date time stamps
were being updated each time I edited the tags.
