Additional to my last quote.

If you would like to remove the dynamic config adjustment that happens in
Ubuntu:
 mv /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf.d/pulse.conf
/usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf.d/pulse.conf.disabled
 ln -s ../pulse-alsa.conf /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf.d/zz-pulse-alsa.conf

And to revert back:
 mv /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf.d/pulse.conf.disabled
/usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf.d/pulse.conf
 rm -f /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf.d/zz-pulse-alsa.conf

If you can (semi) reliably reproduce the original crash with a default setup,
but cannot with the modified setup as above, it would point at the config hook
as something that generally messes with the alsa config a bit too much...

If not then it's likely not to blame.
