I just learnt from Bug 281464 that the option to disable the events is NOT for
disabling all events which would mean to disable the sidebar as I expected but
just for disabling akonadi events. So the option should be labeled with
"akonadi events". Nonetheless the calender widget needs an option to disable
the right sidebar, at least when the widget is in a wide panel where it is
shown as calendar and not as icon.
