Thanks, Aaron for the response!
I don't believe I have scim panel, unless-- is it the one that has a pencil
icon, named "Input Method Panel" and is supposed to help you input Asian
languages? I did add that one briefly on Kubuntu 11.04 after the reinstall,
but I think the problems occurred before that. First of all, I had problems
on 10.10 for several days. Second, I added "Input Method Panel" but removed it
fairly quickly.
However, I do have one hunch that might be helpful, or it might be completely
off base. I had added the Bitcoin Rate widget by 'joelthelion' (it's one you
have to install, it doesn't come preinstalled). For the last few days, since
before I upgraded actually (and I am not sure if it is exactly coinciding with
my problems), the Bitcoin Rate widget was not showing its exchange rate. I
think the website it was getting the rate from, mtgox.com, was under DDoS
attack. That's approximately when Plasma in 10.10 became unresponsive, though
I can't in my memory link the two events with 100% accuracy. It might be that
this widget, unable to communicate with the server, might be tying up some kind
of thread or resource in Plasma. (If so it's a weakness in Plasma, still-- but
might not directly be Plasma's fault.) I re-added the widget almost as soon as
I installed Natty, so it might be to blame for the continued problems in the
reinstalled .
Furthermore, after I left everything overnight, in the morning the widget was
displaying the exchange rate, and Plasma was responsive once more.
Anyways, that's my latest hunch. I can't confirm 100% that the widget's
problems exactly coincided with the Plasma problems but the more I think about
it, the more it seems to match up.
I'm a developer, but not intimately familiar with KDE development, etc. I
hope I can help improve KDE in any way possible with my feedback. My best
suggestion would be to take a good look at the model for handling widgets, and
make sure that a rogue or misbehaving widget doesn't cause problems for the
rest of the desktop.
Thanks!
