Good news! I managed to compile KDE from sources. There were some bumps along
the road but in the end it was much easier than I expected. KDE truly rocks!

And more good news: uncomenting that piece of code really works! I did these
experiments in my aditional Kubuntu installation, after uninstalling fglrx. Now
I get partial updates with my regular user and the "old" KDE, but there are no
problems (so far) using the build with your patch (with another user). And I
guess it's not using indirect rendering because the artifacts when logging out
are still present.
