Just adding that I'm seeing quite similar issues on Kubuntu 10.10 (KDE 4.5.1),
i.e. Dolphin, file dialogs, Gwenview, etc. are extremely slow to respond (or
simply never open).  This behavior seems to be mitigated somewhat by fiddling
with Window Decorations/themes, turning off file "previews" and the information
pane in Dolphin windows, and most especially unchecking "Enable Nepomuk
Semantic Desktop" in System Settings->Desktop Search.
