Okay, it is even worse than I thought.
Not only is it possible to connect to a tethered mobile connection while a
network cable is plugged in. When the mobile is connected you cannot connect to
WiFi.
It seems there is a HARD-CODED priority order: eth0 (wired ethernet cable),
usb0 (tethered mobile phone), wifi.
Same symptoms as described above.
