Sorry about that: I'm a user, not a programmer. This is a production machine
and I can't change or add to the libraries. I'll try to recreate it on a test
machine with the unstripped libraries, if they exist for Ubuntu. 

However, I experimented with the LaTeX code, and it appears to generate the
unloadable PDF document when a certain image is moved 1mm lower than normal at
the bottom of the page. Move it up 1mm and the PDF is loadable. I'm a tad
unwilling to believe the pdflatex code is in error, as the PDF opens in other
readers, but I'll pursue that avenue as well anyway.
