obviously more than just "switching off the screen" is happening here; perhaps
a suspend/resume is happening?

anyways, what's almost certainly happening here is that the selection for "i am
the system tray" is for whatever reason getting re-set (_NET_SYSTEM_TRAY_*
atoms, most likely) and so the tray loses the icons.

perhaps the tray needs to re-aquire those post-resume (assuming that's what's
happening, clarification from the reporter would be most appreciated), in which
case we need to be notified of resume. but it really sounds very fishy
all-in-all as i would not expect such things as the selection ownership to
change in that case, and would really chalk this up to a Yet Another Poor x.org
behaviour.
