that was due to various pixmap leaks in the systemtray widget, Qt and
potentially elsewhere. depending on the graphics card/driver set up it would do
various things in response once resource usage topped out. 

in any case, we've tracked the problems down in kde 4.3 and qt 4.5, so this
should "magically" go away with the upgrade to the upcoming kde and qt
releases.
