FX sent Julian and I his memcheck-x86-darwin binary via email.  It ran fine on
my machine, up to the "valgrind: You cannot run 'memcheck-x86-darwin'
directly." point.  Ie. the result was the same as a Valgrind built on my
system.

This means that the problem is with FX's system, not with the built executable.
 Which gives us a little more information, but not a lot.
