Yep, your write that is the same.  But hadn't searched enough, to realise that
I was suffering from a serious performance problem related to the whole load of
changes which have been made to the graphical sub system.

I followed the instructions on this website -
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1130582 - it's solved a lot of my
problems including issues with Kile/TexMaker and Firefox.  For reference I used
the optimal solution given.
