Since this is still marked "unconfirmed" I thought I'd mention that I'm getting
exactly the same symptoms as FX describes, all the way down the line, on a
system with the same CPU and OS.  I also looked in the system console in case
there was anything useful there.  FWIW, when I try "valgrind -d -d -v -v" I get
the following console messages, in addition to the output FX previously posted:
