Just one quick note, because it seems to be solved:

 I have two desktops:

 One is Kubuntu 8.10 with KDE 4.2.2. installed with these instructions:
http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-4.2.2

 This does not show the bug:

A fresh install of 9.04 shows the bug.
