I think the summary doesn't quite describe it (although initial comment did say
about X freezing):

This doesn't only affect to the problematic window but hangs the whole desktop
and prevents user using any other program too.

I typically get rid of the situation by wanking enough alt+f (trying to access
file menu) but when the hangup opens or crashes the whole window doesn't seem
to be any consistent behavior. Most likely something else happens than what I
think helps.
