I installed esd now to test... and phonon-xine works just fine with ESD here.

If you want to find out why it fails the first step is to look at all the debug
output. You can get more debug output by setting the environment variables
PHONON_XINE_VERBOSITY=3
PHONON_XINE_DEBUG=1
PHONON_DEBUG=1
