Ok, I located it finally. It seems I copied the number wrong, off by one digit:
it's revision r854556 that broke for me. The previous revision to it is 854549,
and that one works fine. 

In the command line I can see kwin outputting:
kwin(16975): Compositing self-check failed, disabling compositing.

I will do further tests with other nvidia drivers and see if I can enlighten
more on the issue
