Following the steps I posted originally no longer trigger a crash...

Once I finish renaming the top directory where sub folders are expanded and press \
enter to end edit mode, the sub folder tree structure closes automatically and the \
"-" to the left of the parent folder remains a dash (-) as if the sub directories \
were open even though they are now closed. Clicking on the "-" changes it back to a \
"+" and the sub directory tree remains closed/unexpanded. A second click on what now \
is a "+" opens the tree as expected and no crash ensues.

Basically, then, renaming a top level folder when sub folders are open will close the \
sub folders but two clicks are then required to open it back up--one changes the dash \
back to a plus, and the second opens the sub folders.
