Thank you for your reply. I have since tested my computer with sidux's
livecd it uses kde 3.5.9 and a newer version of Alsa and the kmix is the
same version that eliminated it as  a bug. I am leaning more towards Alsa as
the reason the microphone does not work in the linux distro Kanotix. I am a
newbie when it comes
to debugging these things and swat at things that may not actually be the
problem, thank you for your advice.

For setting up your soundcard, please search help at your Linux distributor, hardware \
vendor or in appropriate internet forums. if this is a general issue for your \
soundcard, you might consider to open a bug report at the ALSA soundcard driver \
