In fact I can turn my head and look at an example of just that (made myself). If the idea is to emulate a slab of clay/rock/whatever, I fail to see why this is incompatible with the edges (i.e. parts that would have a lower Z-value if you were assigning heights to the pixels) being a different color. (I'm still fiddling with alternate colors; in general, dark gray edges seem far more subtle.)
