Ah, this explains everything: it's not the style (I've tried it with Cleanlooks) but \
the color setting. Dolphin mixes the window background with the view background. If \
the colors are (nearly) the same, you won't see much difference.

I've reopened this issue but I've to admit that it's not a high priority issue at the \
moment :-)
