This is by design.  Until 5.0.3, MySQL limited the size of varchar/varbinary fields \
to a length of 255 characters.  That length is now 65k, but many many many people are \
still running older MySQL (plus it'd be hard to code in forward-backward \
compatibility.

I'm going to mark this as LATER so that we can be sure to make this longer in 2.0.  \
We can make sure to depend on MySQL > 5.0.3 (or later if some other issue comes up).
