Submitting this bug report was the only way I could think of to get some assistance in solving the problem. Re "arts backend": How do I go about that? One final comment and a bit of (I hope) constructive criticism: This is not the first time I've had problems with sound under KDE. I'm not exactly a n00b so if I have problems what does the non-technical user think of KDE / Linux? It should not be this difficult to get such a basic facility operational. I can only hope that KDE4 presents a far more friendly face to the user community. If it doesn't, how can I help to ensure that it does?
