hmm Valerio I should have found a way to reporoduce the crash.
- put the file George has attached in a directory in which you have other 
  pictures
- be careful it is not the first one (let's say in the middle) rename it for 
  that
- double click on the first picture (i run gv from konsole)
- press space untill you get the "offending" picture 
here it crashed.
My bt is not readable, but I can understand that
CFImageFormat::readXCFE is in the bt.
And XCF: read failure on layer seems to say XCFImageFormat::loadLayer.
