Sorry, lost track of this bug and didn't see your question.  It seems now that \
everything is working fine.

I believe the bug was partly caused by hardware acceleration in the ATI drivers for \
"Xv" video.  On upgrading the ATI drivers to 8.28.8 fullscreen began working.
