This is almost certainly not a gwenview bug.

kdelibs handles mimetypes, and on my kde-3.5.1 box:
/usr/share/mimelnk/image/tiff.desktop contains:
Patterns=*.tiff;*.TIFF;*.tif;*.TIF;
