if you don't want the buttons to disappear you could first run a script like this:

kwriteconfig --file kickerrc --group buttons --key RemoveButtonsWhenBroken --type bool false
dcop kicker kicker configure

and then

kwriteconfig --file kickerrc --group buttons --key RemoveButtonsWhenBroken --type bool true
dcop kicker kicker configure

when you're done. does that work for you?
