Update: this seems to be the correct workaround (instead of either removing \
~/.kde/share/config/kmailrc or ~/.kde/share/apps/kmain/kmmainwin.rc):

Open ~/.kde/share/apps/kmain/kmmainwin.rc and replace your manually added filter \
icons by the "ActionList" line, e.g.:


 <ToolBar noMerge="1" name="mainToolBar" fullWidth="true" > 
   <text>Main Toolbar</text> 
   <Action name="new_message" /> 
   <Action name="check_mail_in" />
   <ActionList name="toolbar_filter_actions" />
 </ToolBar>
