OK, the problem seems to be related to the CD drive, as I have it with one CD drive \
and not the other (on the same computer). Some more info:
Working CD drive:
hdd: _NEC DV-5700A, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
hdd: ATAPI 40X DVD-ROM drive, 256kB Cache, UDMA(33)
"non"-working CD drive:
hdc: ASUS CRW-4816A, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
hdc: ATAPI 48X CD-ROM CD-R/RW drive, 2048kB Cache, UDMA(33)

hdc is master, hdd is slave
