I am using an Athlon 2400+ (non 64) and I've got the same problem. 
I also noticed that doing a cdparanoia (command line) rip, and starting kaudiocreator \
resulted in a significant slowing down of the cdparanoia ripping.

I also have the problem that the kaudiocreator gui is very unresponsive when there is \
a CD selected, I have to wait a few seconds before the display refreshes, not just \
during ripping.
